Newquay A Fishing Village Of Old

Nov 18th, 2011 Fred Ramsbottom

Once a quaint little fishing village, Newquay is now the hub of Cornwalls tourism industry. Drawing in well over 100,000 people throughout the summer months, Newquay is a firm favourite with young and old alike.

One of New quays main attractions is something that the town was lucky to have bestowed up it, the many beaches that are available. Various, high quality beaches line the Cornish coastline, but only few can compare to the standard of Newquays beaches. Soft, golden sand fills the ten beaches in Newquay making them ideal for both sunbathing and a relaxing day on the sands with family.

Of course, where theres a beach theres water. And where theres water, there can be surfing, Newquays most famous activity.

Cited as The Surfing Capital of Great Britain, its impossible to walk through Newquay without seeing something relating to surfing. The main streets throughout the town are scattered with surfing shops, selling a range of surfing attire and accessories, from swimsuits to surfboards, whilst many of the cafes and restaurants are themed around the surfing lifestyle. Furthermore, some of the more popular surfing shops in the town are the surfing hire shops. Although some people enjoy surfing as a pastime, it can often be an onerous task travelling with a surfboard, especially if coming from out of the area. These hire shops allow for people to simply hire, on a daily or weekly basis, a range of surfing equipment to fulfil their entire individual surfing needs.

Newquays primary surfing beach is the world famous Fistral Beach. Beautiful for families and as a relaxing day out, Fistral Beach is renowned as the best surfing beach in Cornwall. So popular, it has played host to the international Rip Curl Boardmasters competition for over 20 years.

Although surfing is one of Newquays primary attractions, it is not to everyones tastes and something a little more relaxed is often wanted, which is easily findable. For example, Newquay Zoo, established for 40 years, is a fantastic zoo, not only for its wide range of animals, but for the work that is carried out there in respect of endangered species. Newquay Zoo is part of several programs to help aid with the increase in population of many animals that are facing extinction. Red Pandas and Humboldt Penguins are two of the zoos most popular endangered species exhibits, whilst there are over a dozen other endangered species projects running, including lions, tapirs and lemurs.

Newquay has a healthy residential housing market, but an even healthier tourist accommodation market. From 5 star hotels that over look one of the many beaches, to a clean and tidy caravan site, Newquay has an extensive range of different accommodation types to suit every visitors budgets and needs.

Many visitors to Newquay are return visitors. Whether its returning from their first visit the previous year or a serial returner, now coming back with their family to their favoured child hotspot, Newquay has a passion about it that just cannot be compared to any other seaside resort in the United Kingdom.
